RACE INSTRUCTION       

INTRODUCTION

1.         The Forces Open/Inter Corps Windsurfing Championships will be held off Inn on the Beach, Hayling Island, Hampshire, PO11 0AS 15-19 May 2017.

AUTHORITY

2.         The event will be organised by the ASA (W) Race Committee as per the ASA (W) Events Calendar 2016.

ELIGIBILITY

3.         The event is open to all members of the Forces. Civil Servants and MOD dependants may take part as guests, but will not be eligible for prizes.  The ASA (W) Race Committee may invite other guests as appropriate.

RULES

4.         Racing Rules are as per the UKWA slalom racing rules with exception of the start flag sequence that will be briefed at the start of the event.

REGISTRATION

5.         Registration will take place on the 1st of the event from 0900hrs. (NO PRE REGISTRATION IS REQUIRED). Those only racing on other days can register with the undersigned ‘ad hoc’.

DISCIPLINES

6.         The event will consist of the following 4 individual disciplines over the 5 day duration.  The ASA (W) Race Committee will decide on what day disciplines will be raced according to prevailing weather conditions.

a. Master Blaster

b. Slalom

c. Long Distance

d. Freestyle

FLEETS

7.         There will be 3 fleets within the competition:

a.         Freerace 3.  The aim of the fleet is to introduce newcomers to competitive windsurfing and those who are not yet planning.  The competition will be a ‘One Design’ basis using boards with daggerboards.  There are boards available from AISTC(S) for those who do not have them. These must be pre-booked with the undersigned before the event.  There will be an opportunity to use daggerless boards which should be brought if owned.

b.         Freerace 2. The aim of this fleet is to coach and development sailors for eventual progression into the Open fleet using a reduced course length where practical. Any board and sail can be used.

c.         Freerace 1.  This is the premier fleet where any board and sail can be used in Master Blaster, Long Distance and Freestyle. The Slalom discipline will be raced on boards of no more than 85cm wide.

NOVICE SKILLS AND RACING

8.         The novice coaching, skills and intro into competition racing will be conducted from throughout the week.

9.         Army Corps secretaries are to bring suitable ASA funded Corps equipment for Freerace 2 sailors to be familiarised on.

PRIZES

10.       There will be prizes for all fleets of the above disciplines and Overall Winner Prizes.

INTER CORPS SERIES EVENT 03/15

11.       The Inter Corps Series result will be extracted by using the first 3 results over the week from each team sailor; 4 sailors in a team. This will allow individuals to select the day on which they compete should work commitments prevent competing all week. This is the final event in the series and the results so far are shown in the table below.

WIND STRENGTHS

12.       The minimum wind strength for racing is 10 knots in all but Slalom racing where the minimum wind strength will be 12 knots.

ENTRY FEES

13.       There will be an entry fee of £10 for all fleets.

ACCOMMODATION & FACILITIES

14.       There is no overnight accommodation available at the venue and sailors must make their own arrangements. Accommodation is available at the Army Inshore Sail Training Centre on Thorney Island costing £6 per night. This can be booked by emailing sailarmy@btconnect.com .

PARKING

15.       There will be no parking within The Inn on the Beach car park.  Sailors are required to pay for parking and are eligible to claim for reimbursement on JPA.

16.       There is an option to buy a long term parking ticket at the Visitor’s Information Centre by the Hayling Island funfair. It is advised that cash payments are made as their card machine is unreliable.

SOCIAL EVENT

17.       It is the intention to have a social evening on Thursday 18 May 17. The venue will be discussed at the event.

ARMY SAILING ASSOCIATION

18.       All participating Army sailors less those in the novice fleet are to show proof of their ASA membership, otherwise a completed application and payment of £10 needs to be secured before racing.

SAFETY BOATS

19.       Each Service is requested to supply a safety boat and crew for the event. The Army will also provide the committee boat.

SUMMARY

20.       This is the first race of the season on the Inter-Service calendar and all levels of windsurfer are welcome to take part.
